How to get started
There may come a time that you wish to move your WordPress site from one host to another. If you have been having problems with your current hosting provider and would like to move, we can help.
We know that people often put off moving site hosting for fear of it all going wrong, however we can provide peace of ind here and you need not worry.
Some hosting providers will make this super easy for you and some won’t provide any help at all. If you want it to be easy, we recommend you move to Siteground.
If you want it to be super easy, let us contact Siteground on your behalf and we will hold your hand all the way through. We have been working with Siteground for years now and fully understand how to get the best from their hosting environment.
Once we have you moved we can can then optimise your site settings with Sitegrounds very own optimiser plugin.
If you don’t want to get professional help and prefer the DIY option here are the steps we recommend. I am assuming a good knowledge of cPanel, FTP and File Manager here.
While this is not a requirement in terms of getting the job done I believe it is super important for peace of mind and support if anything goes wrong. The correct hosting provider is one that can help with the migration, provide a Free secure SSL certificate for your domain and provide great customer support
If you have access to your server via FTP you should compress your public_html folder and download it ready for uploading to your new server.
This can be done via phpMyAdmin where you locate and highlight the database for export. See screenshots below.
Create your new database in cPanel. This is where you will import the sql file you previously downloaded to. Give your new database a name and store the name for later. Likewise, store the username and password for later.
Highlight the new database in phpMyAdmin and click the import button. Locate the sql file in the location you downloaded it to and import it.
Now upload you downloaded compressed public_html folder and upload it to your new server. Extract the folder to reveal all your WordPress files.
Once you have extracted the files locate the wp-config.php file and edit it with the name of the new database, the username and password. This will tell WordPress what database to look for.
This involves creating an A record in your domains DNS zone file. This is required to complete the migration so that visitors to your site see it on it’s new server and not on the old one.
